My affair with cattle started before I was born. My father, Buster Brown Bare, and yes, that is his real name and yes, for those who do remember Buster Brown Shoes, yes, he was named after that boy, bought his first Angus Bull, Trogan, in Feb. 1948. It was a big event as the bull cost $500, a very healthy sum at that time. He went on the raise beef cattle, horses, cotton and alfalfa. The Angus cattle went by the way side of raising a family. His dream of a large herd disappeared for  12 years until I started up in 4-H.

My father, Buster Brown Bare and his proud purchase, 2/1948 Trogan, a registered Angus Bull. He also purchased one Angus heifer, Felicia.

Registered Angus bull, Trogan  Feb. 1948

My first cow was a Angus cross heifer, Jewel, whom I sat with every night in the barn yard and read stories too, nestled in the crook of her neck.  She learned to ride with a saddle, a sure sign of a young girl with way too much time on her hands. Granted, I had a pony Patches, to ride, but Jewel took it in stride.

She had to be put down for cancer of the eye.

My Dad, knowing I would be in 4-H bought a little Hereford steer to practice my showmanship skills on before he went to the freezer, at that time, all meat was stored at the local butchers freezer.

When I was 11 (1959) we went to the Bank Of America and received my first livestock loan. This is an unheard of practice now, but it was standard back then. Charlie, by purebred Angus steer, received Grand Champion. I paid back the load and with the blessing of a large profit, my Dad and I bought 2 bred Angus heifers. From these 2 heifers, through out the years we registered almost 70 head of cattle.

Our herd line was named BBB (3-B) after my Dad ( Buster Brown Bare). Our best bull was BBB Cricketter. He went on to sire many grand champions. Along with Dad’s help, I showed all classes, all over the State. My Dad’s dream of raising Angus happened, just a little later. It was the best time of my life.
